Most American's believe that Canada is covered in Snow 11 (or even 12) months of the Year ... Ok that is a bit much, but most do beleive that Canada does get a lot of snow.
While true in many areas, the area around the Great Lakes can differ greatly. Over the last 10 years, the amount of snow has be less and less. There are many reasons, but you can chose your own reason. However, this year the snow is back ...
I often travel to a town on Geogrian Bay called Parry Sound. This small town is largest little town in the area. Typically in February the snow is quite high, well this year it really high and this is especially true to the area to the south call Muskoka. I got to spend an hour or two in a snow bank about 30 km south of Parry Sound. Great fun.
I realiize that the amount of snow is relative. The amounts I am talking about are small in comparsion to places like the Rocky Mountains.. and many of the Ski areas of the world... but this is not a ski area... just "cottage country" ...
Unfortuately I had to come home to Toronto, as tonight will probably be "the" night to be on the Snowombile trails ... As I left the area, you could see the groups gathering for a great evening ride. The machine groomed trails are well marked an are as extensive as the highways. You could go all the way to Manitoba (1500km) or Quebec (300km) via the trail system.. and from there on to the next province or state. See http://www.ofsc.on.ca/Downloads/Trails/maps/District10.pdf for a small example .. http://www.ofsc.on.ca/Downloads/Trails/maps/District10.pdf for the next district.
Wish I was there .... maybe next year. /Paul.
